Medical gases are, in most countries, classified as pharmaceuticals and must at all times meet the standards of pharmaceutical products. A majority of hospital patients are administered medical gases at sometime during their stay. Most hospital staff will handle and administer medical gases at some time – often everyday – frequently when time is short.

These three key facts underscore the importance of proper delivery, storage, handling and use of medical gases. Unless your hospital has the procedures, regular training and systems in place to manage medical gases safely and effectively, you and your patients could be at risk.

Physicians and nurses need to fully understand how to handle and use medical gases as well as what to do in case of an unannounced shutdown. As a pharmacist, you have responsibility for the quality of medical gases supplied to the patient, for in-house production, and for the correct application and monitoring of internal gas distribution. The hospital technical and engineering staff are entrusted with the medical gas systems and infrastructure, but the quality of gas supplied is ultimately in your charge. Compliance with regulations for quality and safety is everyone’s responsibility.
